Maybe the most Norwegian pastime of all is going on a “hyttetur” for a weekend. A “hytte” is a house with no plumbing and no road leading up to it. Grownups enjoy reading and a quiet glass of vine at the hytteturs. Young people enjoy drinking several glasses of vine, setting fire to sheep, and falling down ledges in the dark. Anyways, I went on one this weekend and I “oh-ed” and “ah-ed” at fabulous mountains and the lack of squirrels. Than we got drunkish and I hid while the other girls cleaned up. Hytteturs are okay I guess, but I don’t think people enjoy being looked up with me in wilderness with no running water.
